The 50th anniversary of cooperation between China and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was celebrated in Beijing recently. The commemorative events accompanying the annual IP publicity week have sparked wide attention and strong response from the society.
The debut of Chinese representatives at a WIPO meeting, the first PCT international application filed by a Chinese applicant and a host of other historic photos at a photo show featuring the cooperation are the witnesses of the 50 years of close cooperative relationship between China and the WIPO.
"China has been firmly committed to upholding the multilateral system of international intellectual property rights (IPR), and the country's cooperation with the WIPO has been expanded and deepened with fruitful results. China has always attached great importance to IPR protection, and exerted efforts to make the country strong in intellectual property. China has strengthened the legal protection of IPR, improved the IPR management system, strengthened IPR full-chain protection, and continued to improve the innovation and business environment," noted Chinese President Xi Jinping in his congratulatory letter, acknowledging the prolific results of the 50 years' cooperation and reaffirming Chinese government's principles and position on prioritizing IPR protection.
After reading of President Xi's letter by Ding Xuexiang, Member, Standing Committee of Political Bureau, the CPC (Communist Party of China) Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, a thunderous round of applause seemed to never end.
President Xi's letter drew immediate and great response from the participants. Many of them highlighted the letter's profound insights, paramount instructive meaning, distinctive concepts matching the current era, broad international vision, all of which serve as a beacon for the advancement of the IPR system in the new era and as well as a new starting point as guiding the friendly cooperation between China and the WIPO.
The WIPO set up a China Office in Beijing, installed an IP master of law program with Shanghai Tongji University ... its cooperation with China runs deep and wide, having arrived in many local areas and fueling China's international IP cooperation and construction of a world-class environment for doing business.
Beijing has been an important participant of the cooperation between China and the WIPO. "The IPR system in the nation's capital will study hard at President Xi's letter and absorb its instructions, execute the work of IPR reform and development, advance the implementation of the city's Outline of the Construction of a Demonstration City of the IPR Powerhouse Country Project (2021-2035), deepen reform in the IPR full-chain, expand IPR international communication and cooperation, bolster protection over the IPR full-chain protection and build a world-class IPR environment for doing business," said Yang Dongqi, Director General of Beijing Municipal IP Office.
"It's an opportune time for us to scale new heights of IP protection," A video on the launch of the construction of national IPR protection demonstration areas played on site lightened the mood at the main venue of the publicity week. The 10 IPR protection demonstration areas with their unique qualities and strengths epitomize China's efforts in enhancing IP protection.
"We have written the infinite aspiration for exploring the vast universe into Chinese romance and created one Chinese miracle after another in the process," Liu Yang, the first ever space-trotting female Chinese astronaut added her voice to IPR protection on scene. "Advocate the IPR cultural concept of 'respect knowledge, preach innovation, obey the law with honesty and credibility, compete fairly', accelerate the construction of an IPR powerhouse country and an aerospace powerhouse country, print more Chinese stories in the vast space, and pursue more brilliant space dreams of the Chinese people."
Those who share the same value cannot be separated by distance. Embracing cooperation and achieving a win-win result are the themes of the era and the trend. China's 50 years of cooperation with the WIPO is the 50 years of China's learning of advanced experiences from the world and quickly advancing the development of its IPR system as well as the 50 years of China's offering of its wisdom and power to help the global IPR system prosper. At a new historical point, China and the WIPO are expected to continue joining hands in advancing international IPR cooperation, ushering the global IPR governance system into a fairer and equitable direction and contributing more to the wellbeing of the entire human kind.
